Macon Race Report 6/3/07 Half Iron Man Race Report WHAT A DAY! We started out with the water gods on our side, the rain from the night before and the morning of made it 77.6 degrees which made it wetsuit legal. Some people didn’t care, but for non swimmers like me I will take any advantage I can get. The swim went pretty well except for being kicked in the face and having my goggles knocked off. I came out of the water at 36:33, and considering I felt good throughout my swim I wasn’t going to complain. As I ran through transition with my bike I got even more excited b/c I saw my coaches bike still there, which meant that with his 3 minute delayed start he didn’t pass me. I haven’t felt real good about my swim over the past month in a half so if he would have passed me in the swim I would have known that I was having a bad day since he started 3 minutes behind me. The bike was my dream course, rolling hills! Need I say more! I had to reel myself in a few times telling myself I still had a half marathon and not to kill the bike. I concentrated on what Forrest had said and just kept my heart rate where he had instructed me to rather than going on mph and feel. I really just wanted to keep the bike under 3 hours with that being my main goal. I knew from looking at last years results that I was going to have a tough time placing if everything didn’t go perfect, which it rarely does. I finished the bike amazed at my time of 2:52, and started to question how my legs would feel with that bike time. The first mile sucked, and the second but I started to get into a groove after that. There was this girl who went back and forth with me on the bike and she when she passed me on the run I tried to keep up with her. I quickly decided that was a bad mistake and just got into my own groove. Miles 9 & 10 I started feeling the hot and humid heat. My run quickly turned |
into a
run with a walk not only at every aid station but every half mile as
well. About mile 11 a girl that I had passed early on passed me back
and said, I know you aren’t going to walk when you have been hauling
butt this entire run. Well, that was all I needed and with 2.1 miles
left I knew I wouldn’t make 5:24, but decided I could make 5:30 if I
jogged the rest of the way. I finished with a time of 5:27, and a 1:55
half marathon time. I ended up placing 1st in my age group
and 11th overall, and was dumbfounded. I felt like I had
such a tough day that there wasn’t anyway I would place, and I still
did.
