Hartsville Race Report

9/9/07

Hartsville International

Okay, so a little overdue but I figured I would stop procrastinating and get out my race report from Hartsville International Distance Triathlon Sep. 9.  So I am going to start this out with letting everyone know that I am not as tough as I may seem sometimes.  This race definitely had me at my breaking point which doesn’t happen very often.  The day before the race was my husbands birthday, so trying to get in my 4 hour ride, spend time with my husband, and drive 2.5 hours for a race made for a busy day.  Let’s just say that by the time I left my house for Hartsville, SC I was a little tired.  I ended up getting to Hartsville with my 2 room mates already asleep at 9:30 wishing I was where they were.  I did manage to get some sleep, and was just thankful my hubby said it was ok for me to go down the night before.

Setting up transition, getting my registration, and stretching all took a little longer than normal and I was beginning to think I should have gotten up earlier.  I keep trying to be positive as I see someone I coach, Joshua, who is doing there first Olympic distance tri.  The horn blows for the swim and I soon realize the water is all of 90 degrees if not more.  So I am over half way through the swim and hear my 15 min. alarm go off and I think I am in a good position to beat the swim from last year.  Little did I know I was going to go off course which caused me to go over my time from last year by a minute.  I figured oh well, I will make it up on the bike . . . little did I know what was to come.

I was so happy to have my new carbon fiber tri shoes (thanks trisports.com) and speedplay pedals someone gave me, however as I start the bike I can’t get clipped in.  miles down the road I am frustrated and stop, still can’t get clipped in.  I proceeded to say not so nice things and started riding again trying to figure out what to do.  I guess I then decide I am going to cry and feel sorry for myself.  I thought of Joshua and his family and how that would look so I decide to suck it up and ride the entire bike on top of my pedals.  This course is not flat by any means so I had multiple bruises from where I was on hills and my feet kept slipping but oh well.

I hit the run knowing that in the past I have had a hard time with this run course b/c of all the mini side streets and never knowing how far you are to the finish.  I know a couple people in my age group passed me while I was stopped on the bike, so I just hope I can catch them.  My run starts out feeling great, and I slow my pace down a little as I took my garmin with me to keep track of my pace.  I ended up seeing a couple people I coach on the run as well as passing Joshua.  I came to the finish and saw Joshua’s sisters with a sign they had made for Joshua and myself, it was enough to help me finish strong and with a smile.

I placed first in my age group, but finished slower than last year.  I am glad I finished as I go into this weekend with Greenwood Half Iron and IMFL 5 weeks away!  Thanks for everyone's help and support as always!!!
